HTML Site Map in 6 Steps | Article

I've just written a new article to answer a client's question: "What is a site map anyway?"

In the article, I explain the two basic types of site maps: an HTML site map page and an XML Sitemap for Google and other search engines. I also tell you how you, your Web site and your site's visitors can all benefit from having an HTML site map included on your Web site.

I hope you'll take a look at the article and follow the 6 steps to create a site map. If you have any questions that the article doesn't answer, post your question here and I'll follow up in another post.

A reader wrote to ask for clarification on step #4 in this article on site maps. She wanted to know if I meant to advise adding a description in the list or in the META description for the page, and to ask if the anchor text I wrote about is also pertaining to the list.

Answer: When creating an HTML site map page, you want to include a link to every page in your site. You can use keyword rich text for the anchor text of those links -- just be sure the link remains meaningful to live visitors. Along with the link, it is helpful to include a brief description of the page being linked to. Again, make this useful for real live people.

META descriptions are a topic for another article. Google XML Sitemaps also follow different guidelines. See the full article for more about creating an HTML site map page and for links to information about XML Sitemaps.

This article was SO helpful. Nice to see html and xml explained side-by-side. Thank you!
Do you recommend any automatic site map generators?

I have used a few different XML Sitemap generators, including one that is a plugin for Dreamweaver. But one I often use is from Rage. It is independent software so you can use it no matter what development software you use and it is inexpensive and very easy to use. Here is a link to more information about Rage Sitemap Automator: http://bit.ly/iUbNY
